Burn piles, when done safely and with proper permits, are one of the most effective ways to reduce wildfire risk.

Burn piles allow landowners to dispose of excess brush, branches, and woody debris that would otherwise serve as dangerous fuel during fire season. According to Cal Fire and forest management experts, burn piles help maintain defensible space around homes, improve forest health by reducing overcrowded vegetation, and create safer conditions for firefighters during emergencies. By removing this material in a controlled manner, communities can lower the chance of catastrophic wildfire while keeping landscapes cleaner and more resilient.

Safe Burn Pile Practices

  • Get a permit – Always secure a valid Cal Fire burn permit before burning.
  • Check burn day status – Confirm it is a permissive burn day with your local air district. Modoc County Burn Day phone number is (530)233-3436.
  • Keep piles small – Limit piles to manageable size; add material gradually.
  • Clear the area – Maintain at least 10 feet of bare soil around the pile.
  • Use only natural vegetation – Never burn trash, plastics, or treated wood.
  • Have tools ready – Keep a shovel and water source nearby at all times.
  • Stay with the fire – Never leave a burn pile unattended.
  • Fully extinguish – Drench with water and stir until cold to the touch before leaving.
