Building Community Resilience Through Fire Safety

Since 2004, the Modoc Fire Safe Council (MFSC) has worked to reduce wildfire risk and protect communities across Modoc County. Through grant funding from federal, state, and local partners, MFSC implements programs that help landowners and residents create safer, more resilient landscapes.

Our programs focus on hazardous fuels reduction and defensible space creation critical strategies for slowing or stopping wildfire spread, protecting homes and infrastructure, and giving firefighters the buffer they need to safely defend communities. These efforts also provide residents with valuable time to evacuate during emergencies.

History of Our Programs

  • Defensible Space Landowner Assistance (LOA): Established in 2004, this program has helped hundreds of Modoc homeowners clear vegetation and create defensible space around their homes at no cost to qualifying participants.
  • Residential Chipping Program: Launched to complement defensible space efforts, this program supports homeowners who take proactive steps to reduce fuels by offering cost-share chipping services for slash piles.

Together, these programs represent a long-standing commitment to community safety, collaboration, and wildfire preparedness.

Why These Programs Matter

Wildfire is a natural part of Modoc’s landscape, but its impacts on homes, families, and local economies can be devastating. By participating in MFSC programs, residents:

  • Reduce the risk of property loss and infrastructure damage.
  • Create safer evacuation routes and defensible zones for firefighters.
  • Strengthen community resilience against future wildfire events.
  • Contribute to healthier forests and rangelands by managing hazardous fuels.
