Lake City Community Wildfire Protection Project

MFSC is working with the Lake City community to restore and expand a community fuel break, originally established by the BLM in 2006, to current CAL FIRE standards. Environmental review for the full project area is on track to wrap up by the end of September, funded through the Sierra Nevada Conservancy's Regional Forest and Fire Capacity Program.

The project spans 1,641 acres. Phase I is 280 acres closest to town. It restores the existing fuel break: managing brush, spacing and pruning conifers, and clearing juniper encroachment near the fuel break and the edge of the community. This phase also targets the Mill Creek watershed, which is functioning at risk from decades of overgrowth, and the project's treatments are designed to help restore it. Phase II covers an additional 1,361 acres, opening up the landscape for grazing while reducing fuel loads.

This project is a partnership between MFSC, Jefferson Resource Company, Lake City Volunteer Fire Department, landowners, CAL FIRE, and Modoc Resource Conservation District.

Funding applications for project implementation have been submitted to state and federal agencies. Check back for updates as this project moves toward implementation.
